Step Into Your Power, Part 2
Gabrielle Bernstein wasn’t always living her dream. In her early twenties, she struggled with drug and alcohol addiction before getting sober and reinventing herself as what the Huffington Post describes as “the Dalai Lama for the Gossip Girl set.” In Part 2 of her interview with Omega, she explains how to bust through blocks, start a spiritual practice, and tap into your creativity. Omega: What are the common obstacles that block us from achieving our highest potential, and how can we remove them?
Gabrielle: The biggest obstacle is replanting and repurposing the fear-based stories that we choose to believe in. Releasing those fears is a journey of unlearning and remembering. That journey can begin through whatever spiritual practice you are guided to, whether it be wisdom or A Course in Miracles or Kundalini Yoga or vinyasa. It’s all leading to the same place. But finding your path is the opening.
Omega: What is your daily practice and why do you do it?
Gabrielle: My daily practice is different from time to time, but I begin every single day with a prayer of gratitude and a prayer of surrender. I say what I’m grateful for the moment I open my eyes, and I say a prayer from A Course in Miracles, which is, “Where would you have me go, what would you have me do, what would you have me say and to whom?”
Then I try to move in some way, whether I do a Kundalini video at home or a Pilates class or take a long walk. I meditate throughout the day, and whenever I notice that I’m out of alignment with my truth, I use one of the tools from my book, Miracles Now, which is a compilation of all the tools that I’ve been applying in my own life for the past decade.
For example, when I’m feeling a little burnt out, I lie on the floor and take a light bath. This is lesson 32 from Miracles Now. I envision a beautiful waterfall of light pouring over me, and within five minutes I am juiced up again, because I’m tapping into the energy field. I’ll also do that through Kundalini meditation, breath work, prayer, or mantra. I usually have mantras playing throughout the day.
Omega: What’s your advice for people who want to start a daily practice of their own?
Gabrielle: First, find the willingness to change. With that willingness, you’ll be intuitively guided to the resources and the teachers that you need to take action. That willingness inspires you to open that email or go to that retreat or buy that book. Whatever you are intuitively guided to, you have to trust it and you have to practice it.
Omega: You’ve said that “stress keeps us sick, small, and stuck in old patterns.” How can we transition from what you describe as “a fast-paced, fear-based mindset” into a calmer, healthier, and more focused one?
Gabrielle: Taking responsibility for your thoughts, your energy, and your actions is really important. There’s a lesson I teach called “Snap Out Of It,” where you wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap it whenever you notice that you’re out of alignment with your truth. Then you say a little message to yourself, like, “I choose to be calm instead of worrying about this,” or “I forgive myself. I release this.” Doing whatever it takes to get out of that energy is your proactive step.
Omega: How do you work through creative blocks, and how can we?
Gabrielle: I typically find my way through creative blocks through meditation, because it expands my inner awareness. When you have a daily meditation practice, you’re in the practice of tapping into your intuition and your spirit, and that’s what you do when you’re being creative. If you are facing a creative block, I would recommend doing a 40-day meditation practice to get unstuck. It’s that repetition that makes change stick.
