For many of us, drawing seems to be a mysterious process, reserved for the few who are “talented,” but the work of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain has debunked this myth.

An intensive combination of lectures and studio exercises that packs a semester-long art course into five days, this workshop led by Lynda Greenberg is designed to develop the perceptual skills necessary for drawing with confidence and has proven valuable both for people who feel they have little talent for drawing, and for those wishing to expand their abilities.

It explores the relationship of drawing skills to the specialized functions of the right- and left-brain hemispheres, based on the pioneering work of Betty Edwards. In a carefully sequenced process, we learn the basic strategies of “seeing” that enable us to draw with a high degree of skill and produce finished drawings of high quality. All exercises are preceded by demonstrations and followed by assessments of individual progress.

Lynda Greenberg is unable to teach this workshop. Kimberly von Brandenstein will lead the workshop in her place.

Things to Bring:

Please bring the following materials to class:

  • Drawing Pencils: 2B, 4B, 6B
  • 4B or 6B pencil [woodless] (optional)
  • Graphite stick 4B
  • Hand-held pencil sharpener
  • Pentel click eraser
  • Vis-a-Vis Overhead Projector Marking Pen (water soluble, NOT dry-erase)
  • 14" x 17" Strathmore Drawing Tablet, 80 lb., 400 series
  • A support of some sort for the larger tablet: a drawing board, foam core, anything that will give the tablet support; preferably a 17” x 20” piece of tempered masonite or foam core that is at least a half-inch thick.
  • A kneaded eraser
  • Pencil-top erasers
  • Ruler (optional)

 PLEASE NOTE: It is difficult to procure supplies after you arrive.  You should bring all of these materials with you to your first session on Monday morning.

Lynda Greenberg

Lynda Greenberg, MFA, a practicing artist in Long Beach, California, teaches art courses at Antelope Valley and Harbor colleges and institutions around the country. While teaching at California State University, Long Beach, she was trained by and worked with Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, for more than a decade.

Kimberly von Brandenstein

Kimberly von Brandenstein is a certified teacher and graduate of the special teaching program at California State University, Long Beach, with Dr. Betty Edwards, renowned author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Von Brandenstein also has worked with Dr. Edwards at the New York Botanical Gardens Intensive Workshops, which had been held annually in New York City.
