Kathleen Porter

faculty member Kathleen Porter is director of the Center for Natural Alignment in Hilo, Hawaii, and the author of Ageless Spine, Lasting Health: The Open Secret to Pain-free Living and Comfortable Aging.

Porter has been an exercise enthusiast, yoga teacher, student of meditation, and movement educator for many years. She also has a background in massage therapy and anatomy and physiology, and has studied Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Aston Patterning, and other somatic techniques. But it was her work with Jean Couch of the Balance Center that led her to learn the one element that was missing from all of these approaches: the importance of a specific alignment of skeletal support.

Porter’s quest to understand how the mechanical body works and why some people experience far greater comfort and ease than others, regardless of size, shape, or level of physical activity, led her on a solo journey around the world that included two months of silent meditation in a monastery in Burma and travels through Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Portugal, where she sought out and photographed women who regularly carry heavy loads on their heads, as well as people who have aged into their 80s and 90s with extended spines, flexible joints, and boundless vitality.

After releasing herself from a long list of aches and pains by learning to align her own bones, she has helped many others learn how to sit, stand, bend, walk—even sleep—in ways that help guide the body back to its comfortable, natural “home base.”
