Papa Malick Faye
Papa Malick Faye, a master drummer from Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, comes from a family of Griot drummers that stems back centuries. He is also a master dance teacher and is the instructor for the dance group Bambou Demba.
Faye is best known for his mastery of the Sabar drum, played with stick and hand. He began his performing career by playing for his friends and passers by in his Bargny neighborhood. He continued to be trained in the Sabar, kitero, and djembe orchestras, and he trained daily for the National Children’s Sabar Competition, which he won in 1988. In 1991, he was recruited to the National Band of Senegal.
Faye has performed in the Super Bowl XXX concert called “Share the Dream”; has had the opportunity to play with such professionals as Doudou N’diaye Rose, Curgy, and N’daiye M’baiye; and has toured with companies throughout Italy and Europe.
