Sarah Susanka

faculty member Sarah Susanka is a registered architect, a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, and a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council.

Through her “build better, not bigger” approach and her “not so big” philosophy and book series, she has become the leader of a movement that has redefined the American home. Her books include: The Not So Big House, Creating The Not So Big House, Not So Big Solutions for Your Home, Home By Design, Inside the Not So Big House, Outside the Not So Big House, and The Not So Big Life.

Susanka has been named an “innovator in American culture” by U.S. News & World Report; ranked #14 of the 50 Power Brokers—Most Influential People in the Building Industry by Builder magazine; and named to the Environmental Power List by Organic Style magazine. She is a sought-after resource by industry groups and professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects, and regularly shares her insights with the media, including appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Charlie Rose, and in publications such as USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times.

What is less well known about Susanka is that she has been a serious spiritual practitioner for many years, using her everyday life as a successful residential architect and author to help craft the tools she reveals in The Not So Big Life. In her books, she explains that our sense of home in the physical structure of our house and the feeling of home in our lives has almost nothing to do with size or quantity, but with quality. She points out that we feel “at home” in our houses when where we live reflects who we are in our hearts.

Using her own life as the laboratory, and by studying with a number of teachers in the art of living more consciously, she has developed a clear map to follow in the process of journeying ever closer to our hearts in all aspects of our lives. She unveils a process for changing the way we live by fully inhabiting each moment of our lives.

In 2007, the Lindbergh Foundation presented Susanka with the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award for outstanding individual achievement, demonstrating a spirit of initiative, and exemplifying great dedication toward making positive contributions to our world.
