Yolanda King

faculty member The Women’s Institute at Omega deeply honors the memory of Yolanda King. She graced the stage at The Women’s Institute's inaugural conference, Enlightened Power: How Women are Changing the Way We Live, in October 2006, inspiring an audience of over 200 women to be powerful and compassionate forces of change. The reach of her gift will continue to extend beyond the years of her life.

Yolanda King died on May 15, 2007 in Santa Monica, California. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, the first-born child of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Yolanda King was raised in the midst of the movement for human rights and peace. She continued the legacy of her father in her own unique way. Sharing her message of the importance of embracing our common humanity, Yolanda King sounded the call from the halls of the United Nations to venues in Moscow and Munich. She performed or lectured in 49 of the 50 American states as well as in Europe, Africa, and Asia for educational, business, religious, and civic organizations.

Ms. King held a B.A. degree in theatre and African-American studies from Smith College and a Masters of Fine Arts in acting from New York University.

Committed to using her talents to encourage social and personal change, Ms. King combined her passion for peace and justice with her artistic gifts. She served as President and CEO of Higher Ground Productions whose mission is to help people find greater inner peace, to empower people to love themselves enough so they may begin to love others, to create unity by celebrating diversity, and to help people embrace their differences until difference doesn’t make a difference.

A seasoned actress, Ms. King's film appearances included Selma, Lord, Selma; Secret Path; and Funny Valentines. She made her television series debut playing Judge Esther Green in the hit CBS series JAG and was featured in an episode of Lifetime Television's Any Day Now. While not working on film and television projects, she toured the country with her theatrical production, Achieving the Dream.

Ms. King was honored with numerous presentations, awards and citations by organizations around the country.

Ms. King was the co-author of Open My Eyes, Open My Soul: Celebrating our Common Humanity and Embracing Your Power in 30 Days.
