Chris O'Brien


faculty member For more than a dozen years, Chris O’Brien has dedicated his professional career to using the power of the marketplace to create a more just and sustainable society. He served as director of the Co-op America Business Network and the Fair Trade Federation, two of America’s leading sustainable business associations. He is currently director of the Responsible Purchasing Network at the Center for a New American Dream, and co-owner of the Seven Bridges organic brewing supply and fair trade coffee supply cooperative. He has lived, worked, and traveled extensively in Africa, where he studied, documented, brewed, and consumed indigenous beers from the four corners of the continent, including South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Ethiopia, and many points in between.

O’Brien holds an master’s degree in Science, Technology, and Society from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a bachelor’s degree from Penn State. His writing has been featured in the Guardian (U.K.), the Chicago Tribune, the Philadelphia Daily News, New Brewer magazine, and American Brewer magazine. He appears regularly on radio programs across North America, including Pacifica and NPR stations from San Francisco to Baltimore, and he has appeared on the Discovery Channel and Lime TV.

In 2006, O’Brien’s first book was published by New Society. Called Fermenting Revolution: How to Drink Beer and Save the World, it explores the historical transformations of beer and society during the agricultural revolution, industrial revolution, and finally the sustainability revolution. He is currently working on a second book covering social justice and environmental sustainability in the global coffee industry.
