Gov. Ann Richards


faculty member Ann Willis Richards, 45th Governor of Texas, is a senior advisor at Public Strategies, Inc., a consulting firm that helps companies analyze, develop and implement their public agendas. She also maintains a busy national and international speaking schedule through International Creative Management, Inc.

Always a political activist, Richards served the people of Texas as a County Commissioner, State Treasurer, and finally, as the state’s 45th Governor. She was the keynote speaker as the Democratic National Convention in 1988 and chaired the National Convention in 1992.

Richards serves on corporate boards including Grupo Modelo and Car Wash Trust. Additionally, she continues her public service through membership on numerous boards of philanthropic, educational and public interest organizations including: the Aspen Institute Board of Trustees, Brandeis University Board of Trustees, Foundation for Women’s Resources Board of Directors, KLRU (Austin Public Television) Board of Directors, the Peres Center for Peace International Board of Governors, the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government Center for Public Leadership Advisory Board, the Board of Governors of the Robt. J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy at The New School and the Save the Children Board of Trustees. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Affairs.

Richards is a graduate of Baylor University. She has received honorary degrees from Grinnell College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, St. Edwards University, Northeastern University and Lasell College.

During her career, Richards has received many awards and honors including: Baylor Distinguished Alumna, Texas NAACP Presidential Award for Outstanding Contributions to Civil Rights, National Wildlife Federation Conservation Achievement Award, Orden del Aguila Azteca (Order of the Aztec Eagle) presented by the country of Mexico, Maurice N. Eisendrath Bearer of Light Award from the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame honoree for Public Service. Ann Richards Middle School in La Joya, Texas is named for Governor Richards.

Richards has served the nation as a member of several task forces and advisory groups including President Carter’s Women’s Commission and as the leader of U.S. delegation to the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in 1995.

In 1989, Richards authored a memoir entitled, Straight from the Heart: My Life in Politics and Other Places. In August of 2003, E.P. Dutton published I’m Not Slowing Down — Winning My Battle with Osteoporosis, the story of her experience with osteoporosis and her efforts to educate women about their ability to overcome the disease.

Richards has four children and seven grandchildren.
