Samnyasa Movement

This workshop has been cancelled.

“Samnyasins (renouncers) commit to live by a specific code,” says master yoga teacher Glenn Black. “For them, it is essential to replace mental and physical patterns with processes that create an environment for absolute freedom, where natural and instinctive ways to relate to space and time can emerge.”

Based on principles from hatha and raja yoga classes, this workshop offers profound opportunities to explore ways to be in our body and “out of our mind.” We discover that all types of movement—not just yoga postures—can become transcendent when done with awareness and relaxation. The result is unfettered and unrestricted mental faculties and gross anatomical engagement done with subtlety and nuance.

In our exploration of samnyasa movement, we investigate:

  • Kettlebell exercises
  • Spinal undulations
  • Isolated joint movement
  • Classical asanas
  • Extreme ranges in anatomical relationships

This workshop is vigorous and is only for people in good physical health. It provides a means to perform dance, practice yoga, play an instrument, and improve aspects of martial arts by increasing suppleness, stamina, dexterity, and power.

Glenn Black is also teaching Advanced Yoga Immersion; May 8-15, 2009, The Anatomy of Yoga, August 9-14, and is part of Being Yoga, August 21-23.

NATABOC CE Level Advanced

Known in the yoga community as a master teacher, Glenn Black has an inspiring, no-nonsense style of teaching that comes from more than 30 years of intensive study of yoga, movement, and therapeutic bodywork. Black went to India in 1987 to study with B.K.S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga, and continues to integrate the therapeutic principles of Iyengar into his teaching.

He is also a longtime student of the techniques of Kriya Yoga under Swami Satyananda of India’s Bihar School. Like the legendary “forest yogis” of ancient times, Black has spent many years of intensive practice in solitude. He is also the only person certified by Shmuel Tatz, the creator of BodyTuning™, to teach this sophisticated system of bodywork. Black’s clients include many top music, sports, and business celebrities.
