Throughout the world masks are used as a magical and mysterious part of ceremonies, performances, and celebrations. This week we make our own masks, playing with personality and identity as we explore mask styles and mask-making techniques from various cultures.

Artist Josephine Monter, who has exhibited her masks internationally, leads us through the creation of traditional and contemporary masks using a variety of techniques, including painting and finishing. We tap into our creativity with a wide selection of materials, including paper mache, plasteline, cardboard, foam, latex, gesso, and feathers.

Through slide presentations and lectures, we study the history of masks, their origins, and their purpose. Those of all ages and artistic ability are welcome.

Bring an apron that can get dirty. This workshop is also offered for children during Family Week, August 10-15.

Josephine Monter is a multifaceted artist whose interests encompass painting, sculpture, mask-making, and the performing arts. She is deeply interested in myth and folklore, and has taught mask workshops at the American Museum of Natural History and the School of Visual Arts for more than 15 years.
