A remarkable social shift is underway in the United States: Single women over 18 and without a spouse now represent 49 percent of the female population. Yet most of these women have internalized society’s notion that a woman alone is inherently flawed in some way. Beset by shame and fear, they do not know how to cope with being alone.

Guided by Florence Falk, author of On My Own: The Art of Being a Woman Alone, we learn the cultural context that spawns our feelings of shame, fear, and guilt of being alone, and come to experience aloneness as a gift, rather than a burden.

Through guided meditations, group discussion, reflection, theater-based exercises, as well as the safety and support of interpersonal sharing, we learn to attune ourselves to our own needs and desires and begin to realize true autonomy—with or without a partner.

This workshop is open to all women 18 or older, as well as health-care professionals who want to use insights and skills gained with their clients.

Participants will be able to:
  • List 3 specific sociocultural problems that make it difficult to be a single woman in contemporary society
  • Describe how women (and men) come to internalize society's notion that "..a woman alone is inherently flawed"
  • Demonstrate at least 3 theatre-based exercises you can use to help your clients deal with negative biases and move toward true autonomy
  • Discuss how heath professionals can be more sensitive to gender-based biases and help single women deal effectively with the effects of these biases
