Many yoga classes strongly emphasize the physical aspects of yoga— precisely rendering postures, telling you where to push your little toes down—and that’s fine.

However, this is not enough to produce the joy and happiness that yoga is meant to cultivate. To practice yoga as it was meant to be, it is helpful to have a foundation in the philosophy and subtler practices; otherwise, what is normally called “yoga” is mere gymnastics.

In this workshop, which is open to anyone at any level of experience in yoga, we explore:

  • Different forms of meditation and breathing techniques (pranayama)
  • Yin and vinyasa (flow) yoga
  • Yogic philosophies
  • Cultivation of energy through simple qigong practices

Each session is a celebration with music, dance, and humor. Steve Ross suggests, “Leave your cell phones, addictions, and dramas behind.”

Required reading: Ross, Happy Yoga and Tolle, A New Earth.
Recommended reading: Poonja,
The Truth Is; Maharaj, I Am That; Byrom, The Heart Of Awareness; and Wolfe, Eating For Beauty.

As a yoga instructor for more than 20 years, Steve Ross has extensively explored the physical as well as the philosophical roots of yoga. He is the host of Inhale, the yoga show on Oprah Winfrey’s Oxygen Network. Ross owns and teaches at Maha Yoga and is a popular teacher in Los Angeles. steveross.com
