How to Write a Memoir

Exercises to Get You Started & Keep You Going

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.
Nancy Slonim Aronie is replacing Abigail Thomas as faculty for this workshop due to a family emergency. There will be no workshop hours on Friday, March 7.

Many of us long to write our memoir, but have no idea where to start. Or, if we have begun, we often become self-conscious of our work. Nancy Slonim Aronie helps us craft our memoir, step-by-step, whether we are an experienced writer or a beginner.

During the week, we explore the many forms a memoir can take, and our reasons for wanting to write one. We write at every session, using a number of exercises to get our words and ideas flowing. By the end of the week, each of us will have a direction, a sense of structure, and a larder full of material for our own memoir.

Please note: The following writing exercise must be completed before the class begins and brought to the first session: Take any 10 years of your life and reduce them to two double-spaced typed pages; every sentence must be only three words long.

Nancy Slonim Aronie is the author of Writing From the Heart: Tapping the Power of Your Inner Voice, published by Hyperion and now in its sixth printing. She is the founder of the Chilmark Writing Workshop on Martha's Vineyard and is a commentator for National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
