Pema Chödrön, one of the preeminent Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our time, returns to Omega to lead this special weekend retreat on empathy and compassion.

"The cruelty and aggression we see throughout the world is only possible when we de-humanize our fellow beings," Pema Chödrön says. "When they cease to exist as real, feeling beings then we can kill and abuse them. The key is to see others as living beings just like ourselves. When we see them as real, feeling people and listen to their stories, we cannot harm them."

Through meditation, talks, discussion, and "on the spot practice," we explore how standing in our own shoes can be the basis for experiencing the empathy necessary to stand in the shoes of others.

In addition, we participate in the Buddhist contemplative practice of silence from the end of the retreat session on Friday night until Saturday dinner. The retreat is suited for those new to meditation and Buddhism, as well as those who have been practicing for years.

This weekend retreat begins Friday at 7 p.m. and ends Sunday at noon. Bring your own meditation cushion or bench if you have one; cushions and chairs are provided if you don't.

Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist nun in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and resident teacher at Gampo Abbey, a monastic center in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Currently a student of Dzigar Kontrul Rinpoche, Pema Chödrön is the author of several books, including The Wisdom of No Escape, Start Where You Are, When Things Fall Apart, and Practicing Peace in Times of War. pemachodron.org
