Innovative drummer, teacher, and performer Ubaka Hill leads this celebration of women’s drumming through the traditions of various cultures, both ancient and contemporary.
Beginning and more advanced drummers are invited to join Ubaka in exploring our ancestral connections to the rhythmic pulse of drumsong. Her spirited and engaging guidance leads us into our own personal power through intuitive drumming, drumsong, storytelling, and chanting.
Throughout the weekend, we focus on developing and improving playing techniques and our own rhythmic vocabulary. Together, we experience the unifying and revitalizing effects of group playing, toning, and singing. Ubaka also leads us in an exploration of topics related to women’s drumming traditions in the United States and around the world.
Bring a hand drum or percussion instrument if you have one. This course is also offered September 26-28 . Ubaka Hill is also part of Women & Courage, September 12-14.
Ubaka Hill is founder and director of the Drumsong Institute, which provides workshops and performances for all ages, as well as information and resources for the drumming community. She is editor and publisher of the newsletter Drumsong/Drumming Womyn’s News and has recorded three CDs, ShapeShifters, Dance the Spiral Dance, and Beyond the Wind. ubakahill.com
