African-American gospel music has a long and rich history of building strong communities. The effects of this extraordinary, spiritual music are undeniable; aspirations toward dignity, commitment, hope, love, God, community, struggle, and joy are all integral elements.
Sister Alice Martin is one of the most highly regarded gospel leaders today. She is a phenomenal teacher and an extraordinary singer. With her guidance, we become a community of gospel singers, united in our love of the music. We explore many avenues of gospel music, including Southern gospels, spirituals, hymns, jubilee quartets, calypso, songs of the Civil Rights movement, contemporary expressions, and anthems. We also learn the vocal technique inherent in each style.
Most of each session is spent simply singing. No previous singing experience is needed to learn and enjoy this remarkable, heart-opening music that will be with you long after you return home.
This workshop is also offered during Family Week, August 10-15.
Sister Alice is also part of The Elixir of Passion, May 2-4.
An electrifying gospel singer, songwriter, and choir leader, Sister Alice Martin was the musical instructor for the late “Queen of Gospel,” Marion Williams, and her Marion Williams Singers. She is currently the music instructor of the acclaimed Bryn Mawr Haverford Gospel Choir, and is on the music faculty of the B.M. Oakley Memorial Temple in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
