Pageant Puppetry

Creating Community Through Procession

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.

This workshop occurs during Arts Week.

Pageant puppetry walks the line between contemporary street theater and ancient ritual procession. In worldwide traditions, from simple village ceremonies to the grandeur of Mardi Gras, puppetry pageants recreate mythic narratives through animated effigies, reaffirming the cultural bonds of a community with each step taken along their route.

This workshop is a rare opportunity to learn from the artists behind New York's Annual Village Halloween Parade the art of building and performing with giant puppets.

We begin by looking into the history and mythology underlying pageants. From there, we work to gain the skills for large-scale, lightweight puppetry, including how to form structural papier-mâché, shape rattan, and fashion armatures with articulated joints.

When the puppets are finished, we learn how to animate and choreograph them, and take them on an evening procession throughout the Omega campus.

Limited enrollment; register early. Extended hours. See the participant letter for more information (pdf format; must have Adobe Acrobat Reader).

Since 1998, the puppet-works of Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles have appeared in New York's Village Halloween Parade and the Henson Festival of International Puppet Theatre. They have created community based puppet processions from Maine to the Italian Alps. Jeanne Fleming (center) is a renowned celebration artist, who has also directed numerous events in New York and internationally, including the Statue of Liberty Festival and New York's River-to-River Festival.
