A samnyasim is someone who adheres to a way of life based on giving up lifelong habits. This workshop is concerned with the letting go of physical and mental holdings that have prevented us from freedom of movement.
Both the body and the mind have control over how we move. Consciously, but mostly on an unconscious level, there is physical and mental holding in the muscular tendons and ligaments. On a deeper level, the joints and the empty spaces (cavities) are prevented from taking what movement should be available.

We begin with slow, methodical explorations of movement, gradually moving to wild, uninhibited movement, all while practicing instinctive movement, or the ability to move without interference from the intellect. The workshop includes:
  • Spiritual undulations
  • Circumduction of the hip and shoulder compartments
  • Delicate, specific hand and foot movements
  • Knee and elbow movements (as they assist smaller joints)

This workshop is vigorous and is for people familiar with using their bodies in some physical discipline. It provides a means to perform dance, do yoga or tai chi, play an instrument, and improve aspects of martial arts by increasing suppleness, stamina, dexterity, and power.

Glenn Black is also teaching Advanced Yoga Immersion, May 11-25 and The Anatomy of Yoga, August 17-22.

Known in the yoga community as a master teacher, Glenn Black has an inspiring, no-nonsense style of teaching that comes from more than 30 years of intensive study of yoga, movement, and therapeutic bodywork. Black went to India in 1987 to study with B.K.S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga, and continues to integrate the therapeutic principles of Iyengar into his teaching. He is also a longtime student of the techniques of Kriya Yoga under Swami Satyananda of India's Bihar School. Like the legendary "forest yogis" of ancient times, Black has spent many years of intensive practice in solitude. He is also the only person certified by Shmuel Tatz, the creator of BodyTuning™, to teach this sophisticated system of bodywork. Black's clients include many top music, sports, and business celebrities.
