The Transcendent Power of Drumming

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.

Experience the joy of drumming as we journey into the world of African, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian percussion music. In this workshop—under the exuberant guidance of master drummer Steve Leicach we learn traditional rhythm parts on authentic instruments, including the conga, ashiko, djembe, djoun djoun, and ewe barrel drums. We also learn traditional dances, stories, and songs.

Leicach is known for his melodious and fluid drumming, his heart-centered and inclusive teaching approach, and his ability to bring people together using the language of the drums. Experienced and beginning drummers alike are welcome; even those who consider themselves rhythmically challenged will fit into the drum community. During the week we learn: basic playing techniques for hand and stick drumming; multipart ensemble rhythms; how to create our own rhythms; and the healing and trance-inducing aspects of drumming.

A number of traditional drums and percussion instruments are provided, but please bring drums if you have them. This course is also offered as a 5-day program during Family Week, August 10-15.

Steve Leicach has studied, taught, and performed in Africa and the United States. He is an expert in Ghanaian drumming, African and Caribbean hand-drumming techniques, drum improvisation, percussion theory, and traditional instrument making.
