The goal of yoga is not to achieve gymnastic extremes. T. Krishnamacharya gave precise instructions so that an authentic and efficient yoga practice could be custom built for each of us, taking into account individual differences in age, health, body type, and cultural background.
In this workshop, open to anyone at any level of yoga experience, Mark Whitwell shows us how to implement these instructions by teaching us to practice yoga as it was intended to be: a means of acknowledging, enjoying, and participating in the very source of life. In carefully selected asanas that ensure our breath is strengthened without struggle, we discover how to forge the union of polarities within our bodies: above with below, front with back, and left with right.
Ultimately, our newly personalized practice of asana, pranayama, bandha, and meditation allows us to experience the intimacy yoga evokes not only deeper within ourself, but in relationship to everyone and everything around us.
Mark Whitwell has enjoyed a lifelong relationship with the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya through his studies with B.K.S. Iyengar, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Srivatsa Ramaswami, Indra Devi, and T.K.V. Desikachar. Christy Turlington Burns calls his teaching “yoga as it should be taught—with purity and straight from the heart.” In 1996, Whitwell established The Heart of Yoga Association, a nonprofit foundation that provides yoga education around the world. He is the author of Yoga of Heart. heartofyoga.com
