If you’re looking for ways to lessen your carbon footprint and eat locally, why not do it right in your own yard?

In this hands-on workshop, Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates, coauthors of Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks, One-Tenth of an Acre, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City, show you how to transform your urban yard into an edible paradise, saving you money as you develop strategies to consume home-grown plants.

Toensmeier and Bates emphasize easy-care perennial vegetables and fruits as the foundation of your gardening project. Through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience, learn how to:

  • Clarify your garden goals
  • Use certain plants to help with fertility and pest control
  • Utilize wet, dry, and even shady parts of your landscape
  • Apply principles of ecological edible landscaping
  • Propagate and plant hardy edible landscape species

In addition, we look at how the permaculture design process can bring a landscape to life. We also explore the elements from which it is created, including plants of all kinds, winter hoophouse production, “bioshelter” insulated greenhouse design, aquaponics, growing tropical crops in cold climates, mushroom production, “microlivestock,” and even helpful insects.
