Description

Join Jane Davies for a fresh, fun approach to making art. While learning a multitude of creative techniques for combining collage and painting, you focus on the back-and-forth play of spontaneity and intention that characterizes the creative process.
You learn to trust your intuition while exploring color and composition; free your artistic voice by facing your inner critic; and find your creative edge by pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone.

“In this collage and painting workshop I focus on process, emphasizing staying present with the work as it develops, rather than focusing on the outcome,” Davies says. “This is very much in keeping with mindfulness practices and meditation.”

Both beginners and experienced artists are welcome. The techniques involved are accessible, and everyone can work at their own level. This workshop is particularly appropriate for artists who feel blocked or stale, and need some fresh inspiration.

Expressive Collage & Painting Supply List

Jane Davies

This is a list of the essentials.  Feel free to bring other materials you’d like to use.  If you are comfortable with the brands you use, I encourage you to stick with them.  Otherwise, go to my Links page http://janedaviesstudios.com/links for recommendations.

  •  90 lb or 140 lb watercolor paper, hot press, or smooth printmaking paper of comparable weight (you can buy this from me for $2.50/sheet if you like): 10 sheets.  We will be cutting this up, so you’ll get many pieces out of each sheet.
  •  Acrylic Matte Medium: one pint.  I recommend Utrecht or Golden.  Do not bring Mod Podge.
  •  Acrylic paint: I recommend fluid acrylics, including Golden Fluid Acrylics as well as craft paints. Bring a variety of colors.
  •  Black and white acrylics:  Blick Matte Acrylics white and black come in 8 oz bottles, and are very good.  At least one 8 oz. bottle of each.
  •  Drawing materials: pencils, various pens and markers, graphite sticks, watercolor pencils and crayons, charcoal, water soluble crayons (any of these that you care to use).  I will bring some to share as well
  •  Brushes: bring a variety, including large flat ones (1” or wider), some watercolor brushes, smaller flat ones, glue brushes
  •  Brayers: soft rubber, 2” and 3” or 4”
  •  A stash of collage papers.   Think pattern, color, texture, as well as images.  This can include decorative papers, magazine images, book pages, sheet music, any and all ephemera, junk mail, etc.

We will be painting and otherwise preparing our own papers for collage, and I will provide my favorite Cheap Drawing Paper and Art Tissue Paper for these processes. We will also be Working Large on big Cheap Drawing Paper, which I’ll provide.
