Description

Experience the magic of marbling, a water-based printing process that creates beautiful combinations of bold designs and vibrant color on silk and cotton. The fluid prints are reminiscent of stones, leaves, flames, water, and wings.

Different methods of floating “paint” on water are said to have emerged in Asia and Persia between the 12th and the 16th centuries. The process was shrouded in secrecy until the 18th century when it was introduced in a French encyclopedia of trades.

The process of marbling can be hypnotizing as we watch the graceful movement of colors flow across the surface of the water-based liquid and instantly transfer to cloth to make beautiful fabric art. Guided by Laura Sims, we learn to choose and mix colors and produce a range of classical patterns, as well as create our own unique images.

By the end of the week, we return home with unique scarves to keep or share, as well as a variety of prints that can be used as wall hangings, accents for quilts and garments, and foundations for nuno felting.
