Description

This workshop is part of our annual Arts Week celebration, a creative experience unlike any other. Immerse yourself in this class each morning, and then choose from among a variety of unique community arts projects in the afternoons. Learn more about Arts Week—and join the fun!

This Arts Week workshop is eligible for Tiered Pricing.

Loosen Up & Unfold can help you move past resistance and hesitation in your painting.

This painting workshop originated from Marla Baggetta’s 100 Variations, a pastel series featured in Pastel Journal that marked a shift in Baggetta’s career and became a metaphor for her life as an artist and teacher. By working on multiple pieces of the same composition, she found, you can discover how to “loosen up” and push your boundaries as a painter and, in the process, tap into your own authentic expression.

During the week, you use the fundamentals of painting as a starting point as you explore Bagetta’s techniques by immersing yourself in a single theme. Some mixed media is explored to foster a playful approach. This painting workshop includes demonstrations, individual mentoring, and positive, actionable critiques.

This is a fast-paced, lively painting workshop for both the beginner and experienced artist.

Tiered Pricing

At Omega, we believe that the benefits of a holistic education should be available to everyone. We also recognize that what is affordable for some will not be for all. We are now offering Tiered Pricing* on select programs to help meet the varying financial needs of our community.

On programs where Tiered Pricing is available, select the price that is appropriate for you. This program works on an honor system. Keep in mind that the highest price reflects the cost of the workshop and allows Omega to sustain itself, whereas the lower prices cover only a portion of those costs.

Tier 1: $425 (Register as you normally would for this pricing.)
This is the true cost of your workshop. Choosing this price helps Omega continue to retain world-class teachers and sustain classroom facilities.

Tier 2: $350 (Enter TIER 2 in the Promotional Code Box when you register.)
This is our partially subsidized price for those with temporary or minor financial need.

Tier 3: $275 (Enter TIER 3 in the Promotional Code Box when you register.)
This is our heavily subsidized price for those in need of deeper financial assistance.

*Tiered Pricing is subject to change and cannot be combined with other discounts.

Things to Bring:

Please note that there are specific materials required / suggested for this course:

MATERIALS LIST:

 PASTELS

Pastels: The largest set of soft pastels you can afford. I use Schmincke, Terry Ludwig, Mount Vision, Unison, Giraults and Nu-Pastels. Please do not bring or buy Alphacolor or Prang pastels. No Oil Pastels. I recommend the Sennelier Paris half stick set of 120 for those who would like to purchase a good starter set. A great addition to that set or for anyone that doesn’t have any Terry Ludwig pastels, would be Terry Ludwigs set of Intense Darks II.

Please prepare your pastels for working by taking off the wrappers, (before the workshop). Arrange them by color family and value. This will save you lots of time during the workshop.

Papers Five 9x12 sheets of white Wallis Paper or similar paper that will accept wet media. Cut one piece of white Wallis paper or similar to12x12 and have one sheet that is at least 12x18. If you are a fast painter, bring more paper and consider bringing another brand to try such as Colorfix or Pastelmatte. Sheets of tracing paper or glassine may be used to protect your pieces.

Backing Support: A drawing board to tape your paper to. I use a piece of 3/16th-inch foam core board. Gator board also works well. This provides a cushion for your paper. I you want more support, use a smooth drawing board or piece of masonite to attach the foam board and paper to.

Sketchbook: Bring a sketchbook or notebook for notes, writing and sketches

Other: Tape to attach paper, 2b pencils, baby wipes, old bristle brushes, paper towel, sketchbook/notebook, a small palette of watercolors, (these don't have to be expensive paints, but not the super cheap ones either), an apron, (we're going to get dirty). Bring an easel.

Reference Material *

Your choice of reference material is very important. You can use photos, a favorite poem or story, a remembered image. Most important; your reference should be something you really want to paint. I recommend that you bring a good selection of photos if you are using photos. They don’t have to be landscape, but should have strong shapes and values.

*Please take some time to choose and develop your reference. It will help you and make it more fun!

Extras: More paper,(variety of brands) A camera.

raw siena

burnt umber

yellow ochre

Additional Colors:

Utrechts Buff white

Brushes: a selection of bristol brushes starting with #8 and going up to #12 flats or brights. I don’t recomend using brushes any smaller than this. I also use many 1” brushes from the hardware store. You can use synthetic brushes also, but I recommend having at least a few bristol brushes.

Surfaces: Canvas or boards. You’ll find a wide range of canvas or rigid supports to paint on. These vary greatly in price depending of the finish, the type of canvas, (linen vs. canvas duck), and the depth. You will need at least three 9x12 surfaces, one 11x14 and one 16x20 and more if you are a fast painter.

Tools: A selection of palette knives, scrapers, spatulas, carving tools, nails, etc. to make textures

Palette: I prefer mixing on a glass palette, but if you have an enamel one or something else you like, that’s fine too.

Other: Paper towels, rags made from old t-shirts, a spray bottle, a water container, scraper to clean your palette.

Sketchbook: Bring a sketchbook or notebook for notes, writing and sketches.
