Our very existence is characterized by four truths, or marks. These marks are impermanence, egolessness, suffering, and peace. Understanding these four truths can lead to profound depth and equanimity in our lives.
“That nothing is static or fixed, that all is fleeting and impermanent, is the first mark of existence,” Pema Chödrön says. “Egolessness is a state of mind that has complete confidence in the sacredness of the world. Suffering is not the result of things that happen to us; it’s how we relate to the things that happen to us that causes us to suffer. Finally, each of us has the capacity to make peace—with ourselves and others. It requires that we be open, receptive, and one with our experience and not try to settle the score. Settling the score is the path of making war, whereby aggression gives birth to aggression and violence gives birth to violence. Nothing is settled.”
During the weekend we explore these four truths through talks, guided meditations, and question-and-answers sessions with Pema Chödrön and additional sessions led by Tim Olmsted, a longtime cofaciltiator of Pema Chödrön’s retreats at Omega. The weekend also includes a period of silence for participants from the end of the retreat session on Friday night until Saturday dinner; those practicing from home are encouraged to observe this period of silence, too.
This workshop is appropriate for both nonprofessionals and helping professionals.
This retreat begins Friday at 7:00 p.m. Bring your own meditation cushion or bench if you like; cushions and chairs are provided. If you are registered for the live video event event but don't have the link to watch it, click here.
