Join Richard Blanco, the celebrated poet at President Obama’s inaugural ceremony, for a weekend devoted to the spirit and craft of poetry.
“The writing of the inaugural poem, ‘One Today,’ reconfirmed for me that the creative process is as much about craft as it is about the spirit,” Blanco says.
Whether you are a beginning writer or more advanced, you are welcome to explore both these aspects of writing with Blanco. Through readings, class discussions, and shared exercises, we touch on some of the essential elements of crafting a poem, including imagery, construction of the line and stanzas, rhythm, and poetic closure.
We also discuss the manner in which poetry is a spiritual journey to reach oneself and others. As such, we explore how a poem’s emotional center and spiritual reason for being affect its relative success or failure, and discuss matters relating to process, inspiration, and writing practices.
In this dynamic and interactive workshop setting we critique each other’s work with a balanced focus on both the spirit and craft of our poems.
