Expressing yourself through art is a great way to relax, and it has a positive impact on your overall health.
You can explore your artistic side in R&R classes with Alan Leon, a professional artist, muralist, and Fulbright scholar, who has been making art for more than 35 years. In a workshop called Imagining Your World, you can learn to make quick, expressive sketches that will stimulate your imagination and help you better observe both environmental and physical space.
Research shows that listening to music can put you in a good mood. So you can only imagine what happens in a class where the instructor uses voice, drums, shakers, antique Tibetan singing bowls, and more to create a healing experience.
In the Shamanic Sound Medicine class, musician, recording artist, poet, writer, sound healer, and shamanic practitioner Rich Goodhart leads listeners on a journey into the deeper layers of their true self and leaves them feeling renewed and vital.
Hoop it Out
In our culture we sit. A lot. It leaves many of us with tight hips.
“For people who sit a long time at work, the hip flexors and rotators become tight, and the gluteal muscles become weak,” says Rob Danoff, director of family and emergency medicine residency programs at Aria Health in Philadelphia. “This combination negatively affects our ability to walk and maintain proper posture, as well as the stability of our spine.”
Hooping to the rescue! Unlike the hoops of our childhood, the Hoopiness! workshop uses dance hoops, which are larger, heavier, and move around the body more slowly. This allows anyone—regardless of size, age, gender, or sense of rhythm—to experience the joys of hooping.
Led by R&R coordinator Cristina Zaccheo, the class covers the basics of this fun, energizing, and focused practice, and loosens your hips, to boot. After even just a few minutes of hooping, your body will feel relaxed and energized at the same time.
Explore Your Energy
What if the next time you felt sick or stressed you could tap into your body's own energy and wisdom to help?
Studies now show that energy healing can be as effective as physical therapy to relieve pain in the body. Workshops taught by Reiki master Brett Bevell, offer an introduction to several energy healing modalities and teach simple ways to access divine energy at any time.
You can take this knowledge with you throughout your stay and even when you go home to help yourself de-stress and stay in alignment.
Learn to Play
Many adults dismiss the power of play in everyday life, but not Howard Moody. He’s been teaching and facilitating play for more than 20 years, and his play-shops and classes, such as Building Community Through Play, at Omega can help you feel more alive and connected. He teaches in his classes that children laugh about 400 times a day, while most adults only laugh 15 times a day.
Research confirms that even just a little bit of play can boost productivity and happiness. Play is also a rejuvenating activity sure to help you soothe stress away and enjoy your time at Omega and beyond.
