“Music is powerful. It’s a spiritual art. It goes right to the heart and to the mind. Artists have a huge responsibility to feed the soul good things, positive things.”
If you love to sing, you are welcome to join Circlesongs with the legendary vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin, and his inspiring team of master teachers, for seven joy-filled days of improvised music-making. If you are new to Circlesinging, we also offer a two-day program of fun and games for all singers, which is especially perfect for beginners.
Bobby first developed Circlesongs as a solo a cappella performer, when he needed other voices to help manifest his musical ideas. He gave the audience parts to sing, layering harmonies and rhythms, using call and response, conducting and composing his spontaneous inventions. During his years of worldwide touring, evolving along with his groups Voicestra and Gimme5, his Circlesongs celebrated every kind of music, like Americana or classical, R&B, gospel, folk songs, pop, rock, beatboxing, and more—combined with any sound he ever heard or imagined.
In this workshop, Bobby is joined by his diversely gifted team of Circlesinger/teachers—including Voicestra and Gimme5 members David Worm, Judi Vinar, Rhiannon, and Joey Blake, as well as international Circleleaders Christiane Karam, Zuza Gonçalves, Rizumik (Tiago Grade), Gaël Aubrit, and other members of this thriving global singing tribe.
Bobby and his teachers lead us on a Circlesinging adventure to build confidence and trust, nurture our creativity, and discover new approaches and techniques for improvisation. The program features large and small group sessions for experimentation at all levels. Peer-group electives might include harmony, body percussion, music theory, freestyle language improvisation, vocal embodiment techniques, and much more. You also have the opportunity to schedule or customize your experience.
While developing the traditional skills required for ensemble singing (blend, balance, tuning, and sensitivity), Circlesongs also is an intuitive and direct experience that builds the fundamentals of musicianship (including harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic precision, and deep listening). The program is transformational for singers, teachers, group facilitators, instrumentalists, conductors, or anyone who loves to sing. Every song, every voice has a place in the circle.
The 7-day program is open to singers at any levels of Circlesong experience; the 2-day program is designed especially for beginners, but will be fulfilling for everyone. You will be invited to fill out a survey upon registration to let us know about your singing experience and particular interests. Teachers are subject to change. Limited spots are available.
Enrollment is limited for this program; register early.
