“Music is powerful. It’s a spiritual art. It goes right to the heart and to the mind. Artists have a huge responsibility to feed the soul good things, positive things.”
Watch Bobby McFerrin's improvisation during Sing! Day of Song.
If you love to sing, you are welcome to join the Circlesongs workshops with legendary vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin and his inspiring team of master teachers This lively 2-day workshop is open to everyone who wants to sing, especially beginners. Filled with fun and games, this program explores the fundamentals of Circlesongs and improvisation.
Bobby first developed Circlesongs as a solo a cappella performer, when he needed other voices to help manifest his musical ideas. He gave the audience parts to sing, layering harmonies and rhythms, using call and response, conducting and composing his spontaneous inventions. During his years of worldwide touring, evolving along with his groups Voicestra and Gimme5, his Circlesongs concerts celebrated all kinds of music, Americana or classical, R&B, gospel, folk, pop, rock, beatboxing—combined with any sound he could imagine.
In this workshop, Bobby is joined by his diversely gifted team of Circlesongs teachers—including Voicestra and Gimme5 members David Worm, Judi Vinar, and Joey Blake, as well as international Circlesongs teachers Zuza Gonçalves, Rizumik (Tiago Grade), Gaël Aubrit, Varijashree Venugopal, Goussy Célestin, Juan Andrés Opsina, Sofia Ribeiro, Daniela Plattner, and other members of this thriving global singing tribe.
This Circlesongs adventure with Bobby and his teachers builds confidence and trust, and nurtures our creativity to deepen individual and community musical expression through improvisation. The program features large and small group sessions for experimentation at all levels. Peer-group electives might include harmony, body percussion, music theory, freestyle language, vocal embodiment techniques, exploration of musical styles, and much more. Everyone will create their schedule from multiple electives to customize their experience.
While learning techniques required for ensemble singing (blend, balance, tuning, and sensitivity), Circlesongs also provides an intuitive and direct experience that deepens our fundamental musicianship (including harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic precision, and active listening). The program is transformational for singer-songwriters, teachers, composers, instrumentalists, conductors, classically-trained or self-taught. Every song, every voice has a place in the circle.
This 2-day “Making Stuff Up” filled with fun and games and designed especially for beginners, but fulfilling for everyone. There is also a 7-day “It’s About Us” program that focuses on deepening musical skills, creativity, and community.
Enrollment is limited for this program; register early. Teachers are subject to change.
Circlesongs for children will be taught each morning by Goussy Celestin, open to all kids ages 4-12 enrolled in the Omega Children’s Program.
