Circlesongs: Navigating the Circle

5-Day Advanced Workshop

Aug 19 - Aug 24 2018 Rhinebeck, NY

Join musical adventurer Bobby McFerrin and his team of inspiring teachers for a week of improvisational singing in Circlesongs.

“Music is powerful. It’s a spiritual art. It goes right to the heart and to the mind. Artists have a huge responsibility to feed the soul good things, positive things.”
—Bobby McFerrin

Circlesongs teachers offer an improvised mission statement for daily living.

Enter the circle with vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin and his team of highly gifted teachers for a weeklong workshop in the improvisational singing technique Circlesongs. Welcoming to beginners, yet challenging for even the most advanced, this program invites us to embrace the freedom to play, sing, invent, and imagine—in music and in life.

Bobby developed Circlesongs as a solo performer, when he needed other voices to help realize his musical ideas. He gave the audience parts to sing, layering harmonies and rhythms, using call and response, conducting entrances, spontaneously composing choral pieces. All over the world, he found that Circlesongs created beautiful music and cultivated a deep sense of community and joy. He further refined his Circlesongs practice during years of touring with his group Voicestra, where Circlesongs emerged from many influences: Americana, Bach, R&B, plainchant, Indian ragas, gospel, Balkan folksongs, invented languages, heavy metal, doo wop, or any sound ever imagined.

Bobby will be joined by original Voicestra members David Worm, Judi Vinar, Rhiannon, and Joey Blake, master circlesinger Christiane Karam and teachers of beatboxing, classical influences, and more. Their skills range widely and each brings unique experience, exercises, and perspective. The program features large group sessions and plenty of guided small group sessions for experimentation at all levels. Electives might include body percussion, music theory, looping, Balkan and a cappella choirs, freestyle language improvisation, and vocal technique.

This experiential workshop cultivates and develops the traditional skills required for ensemble singing—blend, balance, tuning, and sensitivity. Circlesongs also build the fundamentals of musicianship, including harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic precision, and deep listening. The program is transformational for singers, teachers, group facilitators, instrumentalists, conductors, activists—for everyone who loves to sing. Make music, create community, build trust, nurture creativity, and embrace life to the fullest. Every song, every voice has a place in the circle.

In the inspired words of a 2017 participant: “This workshop has changed the entire direction of my life. It has reinvigorated my dedication to music, made me realize the importance of singing in the world, and helped me to understand the function of music in my own body, in an ensemble, and in the larger community and society. I use the techniques I learn at Circlesongs every day with my classes, groups, and in my own performances, and I keep in touch with everyone I met at Circlesongs.”

We encourage all participants to register for the 7-day program, the fullest immersion in Circlesinging, if possible. The first 2-day segment, open to all, provides an introduction to the practice and the community. The 5-day program, building on that foundation, is open only to participants who have attended the Circlesongs program in previous years; other experienced singers and improvisers may request special approval to register.

Registration is by phone only. Call 877.944.2002.
