On the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans, we take a contemplative walk through history to process our collective past, for present healing.

On the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans to the United States, we take a contemplative walk through history to process our collective past, for present healing. This dynamic training uses a 20-foot timeline to deepen our understanding of the history of racial and socioeconomic inequality.

The work draws upon research at the intersection of restorative practices, mindfulness, and intergenerational healing. Together, we begin to envision how to transcend implicit bias and develop a more compassionate society. Through mindfulness-based and embodiment practices, we learn to:

  • Facilitate the timeline experience independently and integrate it into professional and educational settings
  • Carry out an archaeology of self, a methodology created by Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz
  • Engage in mindful listening and group dialogue
  • Make connections to self-care and wellness in our efforts to address issues of structural inequality
  • Understand the theoretical frameworks that inform social mindfulness

This retreat aims to provide space for self-care and rejuvenation, as well as time to process the most critical issues facing our country. Veterans and newcomers to equity work are welcome.
