Omega Center for Sustainable Living | Workshop

Create Glimmering Clay Cookware

Oct 14 - Oct 19 2018 Rhinebeck, NY
Discover an eye-catching and sustainable method for building pottery with master potter Marc Millovich.

Micaceous clay gets its name from the glittery mineral mica. In this workshop with Marc Millovich, a master potter and longtime apprentice to Apache medicine man and craftsman Felipe Ortega, you build pottery with hand-dug clay using the coil and paddle method.

Guided by Millovich, you learn about digging, refinement, and properties of the clay. You discover how pottery tools can be made from everyday items. The process includes building, scraping, sanding, polishing, and kiln/fire-pit firing of the pottery. No glazes or coatings are used.

You create and return home with two eye-catching pots fashioned with low-tech, sustainable techniques that are suitable for any cooking method. It is said that food cooked in these pots takes on a rich flavor, unlike anything in a metal or cast iron pot, and that the natural acidity in foods may be minimized due to the clay acting as a strong base.
