Omega Center for Sustainable Living | Workshop

Decolonizing Our Hearts, Minds & Movements

A Leadership Retreat for Indigenous, Black & Latinx Peoples

Aug 18 - Aug 23 2019 Rhinebeck, NY

We are no longer taking registrations for this workshop.

This gathering for Indigenous, Black, and Latinx Peoples focuses on mindful decolonization strategies intended to help undo the legacy of colonization

In this presentation from Omega’s 2018 Making Peace With the Earth conference, Dr. Yellow Bird reveals how long-embedded cultural assumptions continue to undermine indigenous rights.

Colonization is pervasive, but for Indigenous, Black, and Latinx Peoples the impacts of genocide, slavery, appropriation of traditional culture, loss of cultural identity, and the loss of and removal from ancestral lands remain. Traumatic memories are encoded in every one of us, and the stigma of our refusal to assimilate is always present, especially in the face of current threats to our planet, cultures, and communities.

This gathering, led by and held for Indigenous, Black, and Latinx Peoples, is both a leadership exploration and a healing retreat focused on mindful decolonization strategies intended to help undo the legacy of colonization in each of us and within our practice of activism. Themes include:

  • How settler colonialism has impacted our thinking and ways of being
  • How we engage in responsible land guardianship and restoration
  • How we re-incorporate sacred laws into our daily life
  • How we can mindfully decolonize ourselves and our communities
  • How we can heal historical divisions between different groups

We come together in unity to plant a seed that will benefit current and future leaders, by cultivating the spiritual warriors of today and tomorrow.

Throughout the week we are joined by guest presenters Leah Penniman, Sachem Hawkstorm, Naftali Duran, David Ragland and Stephanie Morningstar.

Teachers are subject to change.

Eligibility: This retreat is for Indigenous, Black, and Latinx Peoples 18 and older, and requires the submission of an Application Form.

Attendance is limited to 2 people from the same organization as space is limited.  Participants may apply for a 3rd member of their organization if space is still available by June 15th.

Cost: $75 registration fee.

All other costs (including accommodations & meals) have been underwritten for this program.

*PLEASE NOTE we were able to switch to a larger space, so everyone from the waitlist is welcome to join us.  However, underwritten housing is now full.  We can still take applications for this program, but new applicants will need to choose between camping or finding offsite accommodations.  You may also inquire whether there is any housing for purchase left at Omega when you register.
