Unlike other self-defense courses that make participants feel vulnerable and fearful, Feminist Self-Defense is a fun and liberating celebration of power that leaves us feeling uplifted from the inside out.
Guided by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist and women's and gender studies professor Rachel Piazza, learn an evidence-based 3-pronged approach to self-defense that combines physical techniques and boundary-setting skills within a social justice framework.
Through lecture, conversation, and physical tactics based in Jiu-Jitsu, a ground fighting system that uses leverage and technique—not force—to subdue assailants, we gain basic skills in evading and escaping physical control and neutralizing an attacker.
We return home with greater confidence, practical tactics we can use right away, and an understanding of how we can use our bodies to free ourselves from gender power dynamics through collective, joyful resistance.
Women, teens, and people vulnerable to gender-based violence of any physical ability are welcome. The techniques can be modified to match any fitness level.
Teens must be chaperoned. Chaperones may choose any workshop offered this weekend or an R&R Retreat.
Faculty recommends you read the following books in preparation for the course:
