Race based stress and trauma are so common in our culture that we are not always aware of the negative impact. Yet, we have all had experiences, some of them painful, that arise from our racial or ethnic identity. The focus of this workshop is on the ability of restorative yoga to aid in the recovery of trauma and the alleviation of stress based on racial and ethnic wounding. In this workshop participants will take a look at their relationship to race and ethnicity, their hidden and unhealed wounds, and will discover the healing power of self-study, restorative yoga, connection, and shared narrative to support healing.
Even if you have never had a direct experience of racial wounding, as aware members of the human family we know that when something affects one of us it affects us all. This workshop is relevant to yoga therapists, yoga teachers, educators, medical and health care professionals, and behavioral health specialists regardless of their racial or ethnic identity, who are interested in becoming engaged in this work.
We will learn what constitutes race based stress and trauma, how it differs from PTSD, the cultural conditioning that contributes to racial wounding, the impact of intergenerational trauma, our vulnerabilities that make this a difficult conversation, and ways to identify what triggers you. We will identify where racial stress and trauma land in the body, and how restorative yoga can be used as an effective self-care tool to buffer the nervous system, increase resilience, and strengthen your psychological immune system as you navigate the stresses and traumas that arise from daily-lived experiences associated with race.
