A gospel, as old and authentic as any of the gospels that now comprise the Christian Bible, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after a 4th-century effort to have all copies destroyed. Because it was hidden away, we still have the only gospel written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.
Mary’s gospel tells a different love story from the one we’ve come to refer to as Christianity. It says we are not sinful; we are not to feel ashamed for being human. Our purpose is to be fully human, “true human beings.” All we need to do is to turn inward and meditate, like Mary Magdalene, in the way her gospel directs.
Through lecture, discussion, Soul-Voice Meditation, and exercises, we learn about Mary Magdalene as a figure of spiritual authority in the early Christian movement. We discover why her gospel was excluded from the current form of the New Testament, and explore the secret teachings Christ gave to her.
We return home with a deeper understanding of why the Gospel of Mary is so relevant at this point in time.
Faculty recommends that you read the following books in preparation for the course:
- Mary Magdalene Revealed: The First Apostle, Her Feminist Gospel & the Christianity We Haven't Tried Yet by Meggan Watterson
- The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle by Karen L. King
- The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Cynthia Bourgeault
Additionally, the Faculty asks that you increase your form of meditation (whatever style it is) or download the Soul-Voice Meditation (sign up at the bottom of the page) and begin to practice it before attending the retreat.
