Mindfulness & Education Conference

Bringing Mindfulness Practices & Social-Emotional Learning to Children Grades K-12

Jul 12 - Jul 14 2019 Rhinebeck, NY
In this Mindfulness & Education Conference, Omega brings together influential leaders in the fields of mindfulness and Social and Emotional Learning, including psychologists, educators, administrators, and teachers.

The practices of mindfulness, contemplative education, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are now being widely explored in schools throughout the United States and other countries. Extensive research has shown that mindfulness practices and SEL decrease stress, attention deficit issues, depression, anxiety, and hostility in children, while benefitting health, well-being, and social relationships.

Research also shows that SEL supports an 11% rise in student academic scores while mindfulness-based education has been shown to foster the inner skills of attention, compassion, impulse-control, and executive functioning. Now many SEL and mindfulness programs are utilizing the strengths of both modalities to create integrative approaches to support healthy students, teachers, and schools.

In this conference we convene seminal leaders in the fields of mindfulness in education and Social-Emotional Learning. We learn the ways mindfulness and SEL can strengthen inner resilience, which in turn can help create more peaceful and equitable schools. We also explore how these tools can help us teach students with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. When taught together, mindfulness and SEL have the potential to transform our education systems and our world.

Through inspiring keynote lectures, question-and-answer sessions, group exercises, breakout workshops, a panel with school administrators and principals, and instruction in practical application, we explore:

  • Connecting mindfulness and SEL
  • Restorative justice
  • The science supporting mindfulness and SEL
  • Supporting healthy and thriving school climates
  • School-based social inclusion
  • Indigenous perspectives on mindfulness and education
  • Ways of integrating mindfulness and SEL in school system

Mindfulness & Education Conference

Deadline: May 19, 2019

Show & Tell Poster Session Event

For those who have registered for the conference, we are now accepting applications for a special "Show & Tell" Poster Session at this event. There will be one poster session held on the afternoon of Saturday, in which the main classroom will be set up with posters representing the work of individual participants or the organizations that they represent. Individual conference participants will stand by their posters to discuss their work with other participants as they explore the room.

Poster Sessions should include one poster (with dimensions of 36” x 48”) suitable for posting on a wall or on a table, and ideally accompanied by brochures or articles that you have pre-printed for handout. We suggest up to 200 copies of accompanying brochure (Omega is unable to provide additional printing services). Topics should be directly related to mindfulness-related education for children K through 12.

People interested in offering a poster session should send their proposal to event co-curator Michael Craft at Michaelc@eomega.org, who will forward them to co-curators Daniel Rechtschaffen and Linda Lantieri.
