Join musician Garth Stevenson to learn how deep listening to music and nature can open up new paths to meditation and stillness.

Watch composer Garth Stevenson perform live at the World Science Festival next to footage of him playing his 150-year-old double-bass in Antarctica for an unlikely audience of 12 whales.

The deeper we can listen, the quicker we can quiet down our minds and be in the moment. Focusing our awareness and sensitivity to sound, Garth Stevenson will lead easy to moderate hikes along the beautiful trails at Omega. Upon arriving at a location suitable for sitting, a brief talk will be given about how his experiences playing music in nature have informed his musical language.

Participants will be encouraged to focus their listening on the interaction and harmony between the music, the sounds of nature, and the spaces in between. The music will slowly begin, perhaps with the sound of the bow gently pulling across the strings, blending seamlessly into the natural sounds of the environment. The meditative music will continue for 30-40 minutes, then will be followed by a period of silence to focus on the natural sounds such as wind, insects, birds, and water which usually sound much more potent after the music than they did before.

Hikes will most likely be 30 minutes to the location and 30 minutes back. Focusing our awareness and sensitivity on sound will be the main focus of the workshop. The deeper we can listen, the quicker we can quiet down our minds and be in the moment.

Bring hiking shoes.
