This week at Omega Costa Rica, you can explore a contemporary approach to Buddhism, learn to awaken love through chant and yoga, or experience memoir as a healing path. You also can use meditation to release patterns that hold you back, practice rejuvenating qigong, or learn the fundamentals of longevity.

Workshops meet each day (except Wednesday) in the morning and afternoon. Sample from a variety of programs with Omega’s acclaimed teachers, choosing a new workshop each day, if you like. Or, abandon your schedule, head to the beach and create your own experience.

Exploring Compassion Inside & Out
Joan Halifax Roshi
In this contemporary approach to the teachings of Buddhism, we explore compassion as an internal process and as an engaged practice. Learn about the latest research on compassion taking place in the fields of social psychology and neuroscience, along with practices that engender compassion. Zen teacher and social activist Joan Halifax Roshi has a unique style of teaching—using story, koans, science, history, contemporary events, interaction, and she provides the opportunity for a plunge into meditation practice.

Stress Resiliency, Cell Renewal & the Telomere Effect

Most of us have gotten so used to living in a matrix of stress—with constant demands on our time and attention—that we don’t even notice how stressed our body really is. But our cells are paying attention to stress levels. Learn the fascinating science behind how our cells age, and how simple, small choices and mindful attention during our day can promote psychological resilience and slow cell aging (telomeres). Discover fresh approaches, mind states, nutrition, aspects of sleep, and stress management practices you can take home. Elissa Epel also talks with Joan Halifax Roshi and Stephan Rechtschaffen about contemplative science and practices that promote a vital healthspan.

Awakening Bhakti Workshop
A Celebration of Divine & Human Love

Celebrate and connect with the divine through bhakti yoga—the yoga of divine love. In the practice of bhakti yoga, devotional chanting (kirtan) becomes our teacher, reconnecting us with spirit and helping us find healing and wholeness within ourselves. A Healing Practice for Daily Life

Pranayama (breathwork) and bhakti yoga (spiritual devotion) are two profound ways to connect with the divine source. Learning to write truthfully about life experiences, to discern your soul’s journey, you come to understand the mythic dimension of personal struggles, triumphs, confusions, and so-called mistakes. Discover spiritual memoir as a path to self-knowledge and take a literary pilgrimage within, using writing exercises, group dialogue, and one-on-one time with Mark Matousek.

Teachers

Elissa Epel, PhD, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect, is a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. She studies how chronic stress can impact biological aging, and how meditation interventions may buffer stress effects and promote psychological and physiological thriving.

Joan Halifax Roshi

Joan Halifax Roshi, PhD, director of the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy program’s contemplative care component, is a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, author, and abbot of Upaya Zen Center, a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe. She has worked in the field of death and dying for more than 30 years and is director of the Project on Being with Dying. upaya.org

Mark Matousek, MA, is author of two acclaimed memoirs, Sex Death Enlightenment and The Boy He Left Behind. A past editor at Interview and O, The Oprah Magazine and contributing editor at Tricycle, Matousek is a popular speaker and teacher who offers courses in creativity and spiritual growth, based on his book, Writing To Awaken. markmatousek.com

David Nichtern is a senior meditation teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. A composer, guitarist, producer, and author of Awakening From the Daydream, he is also a two-time Grammy Award nominee and four-time Emmy Award winner.

Steven Michael Pague, cofacilitator of Omega’s winter programs for more than 28 years, is a certified instructor of Chinese movement and healing arts with the Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi and teaches life skills and nature awareness with the Tracking Project.

Stephan Rechtschaffen

Stephan Rechtschaffen, MD, author of Timeshifting, is cofounder of the Omega Institute and the creator and director of Blue Spirit Costa Rica. He has been teaching Manifest Your Vision for more than 20 years and regularly consults with centers, organizations, and businesses in this emerging field. bluespiritcostarica.com

Nubia Teixeira is a brazilian-born yogini who been teaching yoga for 25 years. Founder of the Bhakti Nova School of Yoga & Dance, and creator of the instruction CD, Pranayama, she is also trained in the classical Indian dance of Odissi and brings that experience to her classes. bhaktinova.com

Jai Uttal is a Grammy-nominated singer and pioneer in the world music community. A student of India’s Ali Akbar Khan and master teacher Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Uttal’s blend of Eastern and Western sound has put his music at the forefront of the world fusion movement.
