Painting Beyond the Photo Reference

Transcending Imitation

Sep 03 - Sep 07 2018 Rhinebeck, NY
Learn to transcend the photo reference and capture the essence of your subject with figurative painter Alyssa Monks.

Experimentation is perhaps the most crucial part of the painting process. While it’s helpful to begin with a photographic source, a painter must transcend this reference to capture the essence of the subject—and the painter’s connection with that subject.

In this painting workshop with Alyssa Monks, you learn a specific process, incorporating both indirect and direct traditional painting techniques, from conception to completion. You learn how to choose a useful photo reference and what pitfalls to avoid. You explore color relationships, brushstrokes, organizing your palette, and different levels of finish. You also:

  • Learn to recognize when and how to invent and experiment
  • Explore ways to see images objectively
  • Determine what information is useful to look for
  • Practice implying, not overstating, detail
  • Discuss the challenges and rewards of abstraction, improvisation, and illusionistic representation

You gain a new understanding of how to create paintings that contain the intimacy of the human touch and transcend the smooth photo-realistic image.
