In this presentation from Omega’s 2018 Making Peace With the Earth conference, Dr. Yellow Bird reveals how long-embedded cultural assumptions continue to undermine indigenous rights.

Though we recognize that every population faces challenges, Indigenous Peoples are uniquely situated at a nexus point of human rights, environmental justice, and survival on Mother Earth. For Indigenous Peoples, colonization is not ancient history but a continuing process of genocide, appropriation of traditional culture, loss of cultural identity, and the loss of and removal from ancestral lands.

This retreat, led by and held for Indigenous Peoples, is a leadership exploration and a healing process focused on mindful decolonization strategies to undo the legacy of colonization in each of us. Leaders will learn how to:

  • Engage in responsible land guardianship and restoration
  • Address trauma that arises from devaluation such as high suicide rates, addiction, and cancer
  • Reincorporate sacred laws into our daily life
  • Mindfully decolonize ourselves and our communities
  • Lead our peoples forward during this time of great change

The experience will benefit current and future leaders as Indigenous wisdom is being sought to move humanity away from the brink of destruction and back toward alignment with life.

Eligibility: This retreat is for Indigenous Peoples 18 and older who are working on the front lines in tribal communities and organizations, and requires the submission of an Application Form.

Cost: $75 registration fee, upon acceptance.

Housing Package Note: Meals and single dorm room accommodations with shared bath are available on a first come, first served basis at no cost for accepted applicants. If you prefer upgraded housing options, they are available for purchase based on availability. Once underwritten housing is full, applicants may camp or purchase housing at Omega, or offsite.
