What do you know about your knees?
We need our knees for many movements: walking and running, getting up and down out of a chair, and in many yoga and fitness activities. Knees are built for use, but they depend on their position to work well.
Join biomechanist Katy Bowman in this 2-hour Teachers Studio as she deciphers knee movement and the anatomical markers that are most reliable for aligning the knee joint and leg. You'll learn how the small muscles in the hip and feet affect knee position and learn corrective exercises to improve mobility and strength in these areas.
Once you find neutral knee alignment, you'll learn how to apply it to other movements—standing, walking, downward dog, forward bends, balance poses and more—to reduce knee strain and improve knee and leg strength. Increase the "movement-nutrient" density of your exercise routine starting with this move.
Discover how to make movement and exercise routines more sustainable as you:
- Use reliable anatomical markers to find a neutral knee and thigh
- Apply better knee alignment to yoga moves such as downward dog and warrior
- Change the way you load your legs (pelvic floor and hips) while standing and walking
- Care for your knees with simple movements each day
