Capacity building is a conceptual approach to social or personal development. It focuses on identifying obstacles that inhibit us from understanding and managing emotions, showing empathy, maintaining positive relationships, and making collective decisions.

In this workshop for educators, administrators, counselors, and others who work in a school setting, we explore a contemplative approach to nurture our social and emotional competencies. We examine potent conversations around workplace conflict and learn to utilize mindfulness, nonviolent communication, and restorative practices.

Through journaling, role playing, movement, discussion, and games, we deepen into our practice of mindfulness and self-compassion with a goal of helping all employees work to perform functions effectively, solve problems, and set and achieve goals in a positive manner. We learn to:

  • Notice personal triggers, biases, and assumptions around race, gender, class, and privilege
  • Translate judgmental thinking into observations, feelings, needs, and requests
  • Communicate clearly and listen empathically for the needs of diverse populations
  • Practice assertive and active listening calls around controversial issues

Faculty recommends you read the following book in preparation for the course:
