Workshop

The Art of Monoprinting

Impressions to Remember

Aug 26 - Aug 31 2018 Rhinebeck, NY
Develop your skills of observation and awareness in this monoprinting workshop with master printmaker Dan Welden.

Explore the art of monoprinting with master printmaker Dan Welden. Develop your skills of observation and awareness and link them with the challenges of the unexpected as you learn to confidently and creatively handle the pigments and tools of this art form.

Monoprinting is one of the most unpredictable and exciting forms of art. You start with a plate, create your design, and instead of applying a layer of ink and printing multiples, you simply paint on the plate, place paper on the image and apply pressure. The result is a one-of-a-kind impression that resembles a painting more than a print.

This workshop is open to all who desire to create with an open mind and heart, and are willing to embrace wonderfully surprising results. It is especially liberating for novice and experienced artists wishing to free themselves from creative blocks, fears, and expectations.

More Information

Enrollment is limited for this program; register early.

Participants will develop skills in observation and awareness linked in with the challenges of accepting the unexpected. You will learn to handle pigments through brush and crayon, pencil and stick and a variety of mark making tools. You will be able to produce many works on paper, spontaneous and planned, analytical and emotional. Each participant could produce anywhere from 5 to 25 individual works.

There will be continuous demonstrations on inking, wiping and printmaking tricks which will be applied to your own art making. You will also learn the ins and outs through hands on use of a press and equipment necessary to make fine art impressions.

It is not necessary to research the process; however readings on the area of ‘Monotype’ would give the novice a better understanding of the activity involved.

Things To Bring

Many supplies will be provided (all inks will be water based and will be provided), however it is suggested to bring the following:

  • Any favorite brushes and tools for drawing, painting or mark making
  • A set (any size) of Caran d’ache aquarelle crayons
  • An acrylic mat (medium)
  • Favorite papers to work with (although printmaking papers will be made available for purchase)
  • A large folder or portfolio will also be important to transport completed work at the conclusion of the workshop.

Preparation for the workshop is important in the physical sense. Please also bring:

  • Comfortable clothing
  • Shoes with good support
  • An apron

And, experienced printmakers may wish to bring:

  • Your own brayers
  • A utility box of miscellaneous items (masking tape, pins, rags, scissors, straight edges, sticks and blades)
