Learn to free your body, strengthen your voice, and have greater vitality using the Alexander Technique and breath coordination with Jean McClelland.

There is no greater joy than when we open our mouth to speak or sing and our voice comes out with power, emotion, and nuance. This state of flow is often elusive, but with the proper awareness we can coordinate the muscles responsible for breath and sound so our voice becomes spontaneous, free, open, and expressive.

Guided by singer Jean McClelland, you receive hands-on work in the Alexander Technique to become aware of how your body can support your respiratory muscles and stimulate your breath. You learn the principles of breathing coordination as taught by Carl Stough to strengthen your diaphragm for fuller respiration and a stronger voice. We also do group exercises and sing spirituals and folk songs to open to the joy of expressing yourself in community and discover your body’s ability to “sing you.”

You return home with resources and exercises to continue strengthening your breath and your voice. Singers, lapsed singers, and non-singers alike are welcome—no previous skill or experience is necessary.

In preparation for the course, Faculty asks that you read the following two articles, provided below as PDFs:

Faculty also suggests visiting her website, JeanMcClellandVoice.com, and viewing her “The Inspiration of Breath” breathing workshop on YouTube.
