A Wild Weekend Adventure

July 21, 2017 – July 23, 2017

SM17-3102-888Ann Kristin Lindsay,

Spend an exciting weekend exploring the lively, transparent medium of watercolor—even if you have never picked up a paintbrush before.

In a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere, we learn about our materials, and then let ourselves go as we rediscover the unfettered creative spirit of our childhood and explore how paint acts on wet paper.

During the weekend, we observe the effects the colors have on each other through a series of color-mixing adventures that give us an understanding of how to use color in future painting endeavors. We conclude with drawing and painting from life—and we learn that, yes, in fact, we all can do it!

Things to Bring:

If you have painted before, and have comparable materials, bring what you have. Academy Paints ($5/tube), Arches paper ($8/sheet), folding palettes and other supplies will be for sale at the workshop. Paper Towels, tissues & masking tape will be provided, but you may want to bring your own.

  • 4 tubes good quality watercolors*
    • Permanent Rose, Red Rose Deep or Thalo Red
    • Any Light Yellow (except Naples Yellow)
    • Ultramarine Blue and Thalo Blue (or Winsor Blue Green shade)

Note: Grumbacher Academy and Van Gogh are good quality student grade watercolors that are widely available. Cotman are not recommended. All "professional" and "artist" grade paints are very good. They can all be used together.

  • 140# Cold-Pressed 100% rag watercolor paper. Arches Recommended
  • 1 full sheet (22" x 30") cut or torn into quarters or Arches 9 x 12" pad

Note: If you have painted before and have good quality watercolor that is painted on one side but you don’t want to keep what’s on it, this is a good time to use the other side. Also, cheaper watercolor paper can be used for the color mixing exercises. (Full sheets of Arches will be available at the workshop for $8 a sheet.)

    • Round: Size 10 or 12 *
    • Flat: 3/4" or 1" *
