Create a sustainable writing practice with exercises from Workbook 52 guided by Lynda Barry and Dan Chaon.

Author Dan Chaon shares his creative process and how he uses seeds from his life in his novels.

Lynda Barry and Dan Chaon have been teaching together since 2013. Together they have developed a set of writing exercises that are part of their forthcoming book, Workbook 52.

This workshop is about a way of creating a sustainable writing practice for anyone, at any level, who may be interested in writing but is having a hard time figuring out how to start or continue a story. It’s based on using a common but extraordinary sort of memory—the kind that instantly “floods” us, like when a smell or a song triggers a vivid image of a certain place in time.

Participants learn an easy method to create the circumstances for these kinds of images to come, and set them down quickly in writing. We start by using autobiographical memory, and then learn to apply it to writing fiction.

Enrollment is limited for this program; register early.

Faculty asks that you bring the following items with you to the course:

  • A standard composition notebook: the classic kind with black and white marbled cardboard covers and lined paper inside (usually has 100-200 pages). If you cannot find one, then please bring a three ring binder with at least 100 sheets of lined notebook paper.
  • 50-100 4x6 index cards
  • Six Papermate black flair pens
