Omega to Participate in International Women's Day Global Centenary Celebration

Events Planned at Brooklyn Bridge and Walkway Over the Hudson

RHINEBECK, NY – This year marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day (IWD), held annually on March 8th to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of women around the globe. Omega Institute today announced that it will join two of New York's events. Omega staff will join Women for Women International for the Brooklyn Bridge walk and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce's Women's Leadership Alliance at a solidarity walk across the Walkway Over the Hudson.

"International Women's Day offers us an opportunity to reflect on the incredible achievements women have made around the world, and to raise awareness about the many injustices still occurring. Omega is proud to be participating in two of the walks commemorating the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day," said Carla Goldstein, Omega's chief external affairs officer, and director of the Women's Institute at Omega.

International Women's Day has been observed since the early 1900's, and the first official IWD was run in 1911. In some countries like China, Russia, Vietnam, and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. Some of the themes for 2011 include: equal access to education; training; science and technology; and the pathway to decent work for women.

For more than 30 years, Omega has offered innovative opportunities for women. In 2002, Omega created the acclaimed Women & Power conference series featuring women change agents from around the globe. The inspiration and creativity generated at these conferences resulted in the creation of the Women's Institute at Omega in 2005. During the next two years, the Women's Institute will be in a growth process that will culminate in the launch of the Women's Leadership Center (WLC) in 2012. The WLC will be dedicated to Omega's bedrock belief that women's leadership can and will change the world for the better.
