James Kullander

James Kullander, MDiv, is a writer, online program content manager, and program development consultant for Omega and other organizations.

His work has appeared in many print and online publications, including “Wisdom is Not in the Newspaper” and “Love’s Legacy Lost” in Shambhala Sun magazine, and “My Marital Status,” in The Sun magazine. That essay is anthologized in Right Here with You, The Best Buddhist Writing 2008, and The Mysterious Life of the Heart. His interviews with Pema Chödrön, Marion Woodman, and Sister Joan Chittister—all published in The Sun—are part of an ongoing series of talks with prominent women who have most influenced him.

As an online program content manager, Kullander has worked with Spirituality & Practice and distinguished meditation teacher and author Sylvia Boorstein to produce two successful online programs, “Lovingkindness” and “The Liberating Power of Mindfulness.”

Kullander worked at Omega Institute from 1990 to 2011 in both the programming and marketing departments, and brought to Omega dozens of renowned spiritual teachers, writers, and performers, including Pema Chödrön, Thomas Moore, Sylvia Boorstein, Nick Flynn, Sharon Salzberg, Cynthia Bourgeault, Robert Thurman, Natalie Goldberg, the late John Daido Loori, and Meredith Monk. He also developed and produced a number of multi-faculty events, including programs cosponsored with Shambhala Sun magazine and the New York Center for Jungian Studies.

Kullander holds a master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where as part of his studies, he was a student chaplain in the psychiatric unit at Lenox Hill Hospital. He has studied and practiced meditation since 1991, including studies at Kopan Gampa in Nepal, the Insight Meditation Society, Zen Mountain Monastery, Karmê Chöling, the New York Shambhala Center, and Gampo Abbey, a Buddhist monastery on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, where he has done extensive solo retreats.
