Leverage your passion for mindful birding in the great outdoors through the lens of social justice and equity for all with Feminist Bird Club leaders.

The Feminist Bird Club aims to create a safe space for people of all backgrounds to enjoy birding through the lens of social justice.

The Feminist Bird Club's 2023 book Birding For A Better World: A Guide to Finding Joy and Community in Nature reframes the simple act of enjoying birds as not only a meaningful way to experience nature, but also one inseparable from social and environmental justice.

Join Feminist Bird Club leaders Molly Adams and Meghadeepa Maity in this 5-day retreat as they approach the pursuit of bird-joy through the unique lenses of resistance, connection, liberation, reciprocity, and healing. We explore the major themes in the book through a diversity of practices, including mindful birding, community reflection, and creative expression.

The Feminist Bird Club is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting inclusivity in birding while fundraising and providing a safe opportunity for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC, people with disabilities and women to connect with the natural world. With more than 30 volunteer-led chapters, the Feminist Bird Club has raised more than $150,000 since 2016 to support social justice organizations that focus on abolition, reproductive justice, Indigenous land-back initiatives, and more.

Prior birding knowledge is not necessary, but participants should be prepared to sit with discomfort and grapple with the roles they occupy while being outdoors.

More Information

Please note: This workshop aims to center people who are disabled, Black, Brown, and Indigenous and/or members of the LGBTQIA+ communities —and the instructors also share many of these identities. To increase equitable access to this course, we will offer an ongoing tuition discount and an early registration period for historically marginalized participants. We recommend that others interested register only after April 1 to allow us to prioritize the aforementioned demographics.

Recommended Reading: Reading the book, Birding For A Better World: A Guide to Finding Joy and Community in Nature, is not a prerequisite for this workshop, but it may add depth to your experience.

This program has special COVID protocols. Details will be sent upon registration.
